Wheel of Life Workshop at Ratna Ling
The Tibetan wheel of life (srid-pa’i ’khor-lo, literally “wheel of becoming”) is one of the best-known representations of the extent of human suffering. It demonstrates how suffering arises, how it is maintained, and how it comes to an end. Even without description, the message of the images is powerful.
Thorough study imprints them on the mind, providing insight that helps avoid duplication of misery. In the center of the wheel, three animals go around in circles, holding each other by the tail. These three - the rooster, the snake, and the pig - are symbols of the three poisons that pollute our lives: grasping, aversion, and confusion. One after the other, round and round, each of the three poisons perpetuates the dynamics of suffering.
The metaphor of the wheel portrays how strongly human beings are entwined in patterns that generate suffering. As we continually reenact these patterns, the wheel continues to turn, adding a new round of suffering with each revolution.
Yet the situation is not hopeless: The very thing that poisons us can also be the remedy for our troubles. When poison is transformed into wisdom, the wheel comes to a halt, if even for the briefest moment, and suffering ceases.

Crystal Mirror
Nikki asked what is the meaning of the Crystal Mirror Series’ title.

We answered:
The Crystal Mirror series was initiated to introduce the basic Buddhist teachings and subjects: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, how Buddhism developed in India and its transmission into Tibet, the Tripitaka, psychological and philosophical foundations of Buddhism, the importance of lineage. In short, all that combines to form the rich heritage of the Buddhist tradition.
The word “crystal” points to the clarity of mind and its multi facets and“mirror” refers to the quality of mind that reflects. Whatever we see is not substantially “real”, but a reflection of mind. The purpose of the Crystal Mirror series is to bring out the properties of mind. The teachings are the crystal mirror, of the mind.

Flowers of Ratna Ling - 2

The energy of human consciousness may share an affinity with light that we do not yet understand. Turning toward that light, we might find it the source of all our inspiration and creativity.
Tarthang Tulku – Knowledge of Freedom

Just as a single light attracts attention on a dark night, action informed by knowledge attracts and awakens others, inspiring emulation.
Tarthang Tulku – Knowledge of Freedom

Knowledge opens all experience to wonderment and appreciation. By nature, knowledge illuminates, in the same way that liquids by nature flow. Like a lover absorbed in the beauty of the beloved, we can give ourselves to knowledge.
Tarthang Tulku – Love of Knowledge

Our human awareness is so powerful that even if we tap only a small part of it we can accomplish more than we ever dreamt possible. Using our complete potential, we can soar to the height where our accomplishments have great and lasting value for both ourselves and for future generations.

Skillful Means - Week 5
We quantify what we have done, there are still the superviser’s goals, only that now we don’t write what we will accomplish by the next break, but every task we start. For some people this will be smaller segments than the time from break to break.
For example, in week 4, one will say “I will fold by the next break so many signatures”. In week 5, the same person will, as always, write down what he/she has accomplished, be very familiar with the superviser’s goal, but now say to himself/herself (or the team he/she is working in) that the next task whether is very small of big, when he/she will have accomplish it.
